Nagi no Asukara Episode 16 | TFP Review
EmperorBrandon: It’s so sweet seeing how motherly Akari is and fatherly Itaru is. Poor Akira got rubella. Shouldn’t that be prevented by vaccination?
Hikari is getting caught in between some girl drama. Miuna is so worried about it, so it’s nice how Hikari helps to give her some perspective by recounting how Manaka and Chisaki had their girl drama moments too that ended up getting resolved. And we do get a tear-jerking moment of the reconciliation this time since Sayu was scared for Miuna’s life.
I was not expecting how Miuna would get “saved”. Thought Hikari might make it, or maybe Kaname would all of the sudden appear and rescue her. But no, it gets rather interesting as Miuna apparently develops ena. So even though a child of a sea person and land person apparently isn’t born with it… Wonder how exactly this came about and if anyone really knew about it happening before. Nice seeing Miuna’s reaction.
And speaking of Kaname, it makes sense that he wouldn’t come back in the exact same manner Hikari did, somehow right in front of people he was close with. We will see how he shakes things up, and things are shook up for him, next episode.
Jun Kuga: I couldn’t help but see Saltflake Snow appear around [Miuna] when it formed – so maybe the snow isn’t just a problem, but maybe it helps somehow too?
Ingraman: I thought that I was seeing fish scales float past her, rather than saltflake snow, and was wondering if the Sea God or his representative had something to do with it…
I want to find out Akari’s reaction. ^^
Hitsugi Amachi: How Miuna acquired Ena is going to be an interesting mystery to puzzle out. Kaname’s return should at least give Hikari someone to share and understand the experience both went through.
One thing of note is that Chisaki got completely sidelined this episode. Only mentioned in passing, not appearing on screen at all (Tsumugu at least got a cameo).
Sly05: Miuna acquiring ena was unexpected. Manaka coming to her rescue? I’m sure Miuna’s thrilled as it brings her closer to the sea and Hikari. It will be interesting to see if it has any larger relevance.
So Kaname’s back. That old man didn’t seem particularly surprised to see a naked person come out of the sea. Sayu has her love interest back though a Kaname and Sayu pairing seems unlikely (though I’ll cheer for you, Sayu).
Another very good episode. I’m interested in seeing why Hikari and Kaname were able to seemingly wake up early and how the threat of the coming salt flake “ice age” gets addressed.
GingaDaiuchuu: Very interesting. An underwater flurry of saltflake snow unexpectedly envelops a drowning Miuna to give her Ena. This should lead to some interesting examinations and developments.
And then Kaname appears, and he’s apparently “different” in some way. Not only does Sayu get her wish so soon after complaining that she didn’t, but she doesn’t have to worry about any incest, either. I bet she would’ve liked to have been there when he emerged, considering his state. Still mostly unanswered questions, but very interesting.
EmperorBrandon: I’m not sure if she will get quite what she was hoping for. I don’t think she knows Kaname likes Chisaki (Miuna didn’t know Hikari liked Manaka until after the big incident, and this one was even less known since Kaname had kind of kept a lid on it from everyone so long until revealing to Chisaki just before hibernation). I also have to wonder if Miuna’s newfound ability to go into sea with Hikari and the others will be another source of friction between her and Sayu at some point.
GingaDaiuchuu: Oh I don’t think for a second there’s any realistic chance for romance between the two (and I’d probably find it a little weird if there was). It was more of a joke about each girl’s dream guy popping up at the same age as them (maybe not the case with Kaname, but I assume it is) just as they’re wishing such a thing would happen, even though it would obviously never work out between them.
And that he was naked, of course.

EmperorBrandon: Manaka not being in the new key visual, and not seen interacting with the “new group” in the OP, has me thinking that her reemergence in the story may not be until near the very end.
Shiroi Hane: Well, she was “taken” by the sea god and by all rights she should be dead – she slammed into the sea floor really hard.
I assume Hikari and Kaname have come back before everyone else because they were near the surface when it froze.
