Space Dandy Episode 2 | TFP ReviewSpace Dandy Episode 2

stardf29: You know, I never was a fan of apps like Foursquare that are based around broadcasting your exact location at any given time to the entire world. You never know when someone who’s after you might stumble across that information.

sonic: Well, it looks like Dandy and pals are just dandy, and that gorilla guy is fine as well. This episode is all about Ramen, baby. We see Dandy try to sell an alien for money, but of course it’s not rare enough with millions existing. He and Meow are ejected into space and decide to look for the legendary Phantom Space Ramen to make some money. However, they end up just eating ramen from places all over the galaxy rather than search. The last place they stop seems to be promising and, well, what do you know a wormhole in the back transports them to a little ramen stand in the far reaches of space. There an alien serves ramen because of his love for it after discovering how tasty it was on a trip to Earth. QT warns them they better get back before the wormhole closes so they book it and of course they forget their payday with the ramen. I guess it is better luck next time. Also, it looks like next week is all about fanservice, and traps using it.

This was definitely a step up from last time as the comedy was more consistently funny for me. The characters also played off each other better here. The animation was great again as expected, and there’s a new female, Scarlet, who’s a real sassy fireball. I have hope the story will actually go somewhere meaningful by series end now.

Buckeye: This is definitely better than last week seeing how the whole boobies thing was downplayed (though it will be back in full force next week judging by the preview) and that the adventure was pretty hilarious. It’s a shame that the old man could have gotten his legendary ramen out to the world, but opted instead to stay behind. That’s just sad.

bctaris: So, animation’s a joy to watch. They’re having fun with the various aliens, too. Premise and overall writing’s not astoundingly original, two episodes in, but really just getting the characters comfortable with each other at this point. Meow’s social media crutch was amusing but maybe a little overused, almost dating the show too much. Besides that, though, I like the growing dynamic between Dandy and Meow. Not exactly a buddy comedy yet, but it’s getting there. And woolongs, ha!

Hrld: This was a better episode than the first.

Damnit Meow, this is why I detest social media. Gogol Galaxy Street View? I’m switching to Hooya!

So now we have Scarlet, a bureaucrat who can kick butt. Let’s see if Dandy can earn her ire, or desire?

Good to see Dandy have a fighting style. Sure it was a pepper shaker and some fancy footwork, but good to see Dandy is actually skilled.

I laughed when they showed how the chef killed his girlfriend. I’m not taking this too seriously, just like Kill Me Baby. I didn’t expect the writers to play the sad story straight. It’s good to see Dandy and Meow will actually have hearts and listen.

Sabure: … The episode itself was fairly decent, and at times was funnier than the debut episode. But it’s still a work-in-progress in my book.

GingaDaiuchuu: That was maybe a little better? I don’t know; still plenty good, but still unbelievably disappointing. I did like the idea that their location was constantly being given away by Meow Tweeting it, although that gag was way too overused without anything new to add each time. I also liked the inclusion of the Bones logo in the ramen universe they found themselves in. The alien’s story seemed like the one chance to actually be touching, but the early bit about him burning his girlfriend by trying to light her cigarette didn’t quite gel with that. A shame, since it’s an irreverently funny gag on its own.

And they’re really using woolongs in this? Man…

Library-chan: And somehow Dandy, Meow, and the robot survive the explosion and continue their adventures. Eh? No explanation how?

TnAdct1: More than likely, the show was getting the “everyone dies” episode out of the way first.

sonic: I’m thinking the series is using a multiverse for the setting where each week it’s the same characters in a different universe. They will probably explain at the end of the series how these universes are related and how most likely Dandy, through his reckless behavior, was the one who gave birth to them all, lol.

bctaris: It’s a screwball action comedy. Best not to overthink the details.  What plot there is to this show probably won’t be anything that requires a strict road map dependent on continuity and logic. You’ve had the “everyone dies” bit, as TnAdct says, and now an alternate dimension accessible from a wormhole built into a dumbwaiter in the back of a ramen joint. (Hint: It’s not meant to be taken seriously.)
