Space Dandy Episode 1 | TFP Review: Dub
Buckeye: Space Dandy is a dandy guy in space. And a guy whose passion is boobies^3.
Alright, that was totally weird, but certainly entertaining. This show looks to be full of fanservice here seeing how boobies are all the rage in this part of the universe. It will be fun listening to Allison Viktorin speaking with a synthesized voice as QT. Anyway, this show certainly looks like it’s going to be a fun ride to say the least.
sonic: Well I love BONES’ work with the animation. The comedy is hit or miss for me, not a big fan of the more cynical stuff. Dandy seems like a seventies version of the Fonz from Happy Days mixed with Spike from Cowboy Bebop. The enemy spaceship with the statue of liberty head with a gag in its mouth is pretty funny. There’s definitely a lot of western based themes; especially American ones. It was a decent first episode, nothing spectacular; about what I was expecting from the promos. Comedy seems to be the major direction for the series. I’m glad to have something new to look forward to airing on Toonami, along with Naruto Shippuden.
stardf29: Well, this was fun. The style of humor here works for me.
Nothing really blew me away about it, but it’ll work fine as background noise (since I’m watching it dubbed and don’t have to pay close attention to the subtitles).
GingaDaiuchuu: …if there’s anything I’d really like to get from this show (having accepted that I don’t get to watch it in its historic initial broadcast form), it’s seeing that gorgeous animation in all its HD glory. …
And in case that doesn’t imply how I feel about the show overall… yeah, definitely doesn’t live up to its pedigree. That’s not fair to say about the show overall after only one episode, but this is far below the first episode of every other Watanabe show as far as I’m concerned, and this one is only one cour, at least for now. Still plenty of potential for fun, and the music is also excellent, although I think I would’ve preferred if he had simply went with Kanno again.
bctaris: There is only one show that this reminded me of in its action-comedy style: Galaxy Angel.
Which is cool. I love GA. And maybe wouldn’t have thought of it if I hadn’t just (finally) finished GA X a couple days ago. (The sub-only portion of BEI’s release I had put off for awhile, so wedded was I to the dub.)
In fact, maybe I’ll think of Space Dandy* as Lt. Col. Volcott’s inner fantasy, or fanfiction he writes while the girls are away on missions. Yeah, that’s it. Why not.
Jimmie M: Works for me too!
I just finished watching it & I got pretty much the same vibe. Which reminds me-I’m in the middle of a rewatch of Galaxy Angel A myself & I need to get back to it soon. Not too bad for a first episode & I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.
Mitch H.: I found myself nodding off, which is a trick given I was sitting in a not-particularly-comfortable office chair. Reminded me a lot of Gintama, without any actual female characters, let alone strong ones. Unless you code the robot as “female”, which – well, whatever floats your boat. Seemed like a pointless exercise in cheap objectification and meaningless action scenes, with a lot of broad humor that I didn’t find particularly funny, even in the abstract.
