Witch Craft Works Episode 1 | TFP ReviewWitch Craft Works Episode 1

Library-chan: This would a decent series if:

The sqeeing girls and boys die. They are very, very, very, very, very annoying. Really? Beating up the MC for getting close to the lead girl? Where the hell are the teachers? And why does the MC just take it?

The lead girl wasn’t stoic to the point that a wall would be more interesting. Stoic can be a plus…if done right, but it isn’t done right here.

Other than that, the plot seems okay. Nothing’s known yet. The evil witches are interesting.

Buckeye: This show looks like it will be a lot of fun seeing how silly the concept is with magic in a school setting. Even though she is the envy of the school, I find the enemy witches to be much more interesting than Kagari. Not to mention, they are the ones singing the ending before getting burned at stake. Those fanclub girls are sure annoying here, which is why I totally wanted Tanpopo to put Kagari in her place, but that’s not happening. I will see how this show goes from here seeing this concept develops.

Jun Kuga: I wasn’t fully sure what to expect going in, but I can saythat it wasn’t that bad.

It wasn’t that good either, but it has definitely got somewhere to build from.

Totally agree about the fangirls though. We’ve had manic fanclubs before, and they are rarely amusing and this one in particular is nothing more than a stick to beat the main guy with.

Momoka Kibi: It’s also to make the “suggested pairing” even more viable. After all if the guys & girls that love the object of affection of the lead that makes the lead himself (or herself in some series) look better by default.

I think the best part of the episode was the transfer students. I also like the whole princess line. It’s like so silly.

That being said the jealous worship brigade is making it hard to watch. If the “villains” accidentally kill any of them, I won’t shed a tear.

EmperorBrandon: While it was amusing at first seeing how attracted to Kagari everyone else, but yeah, I figure it’s going to get really old if they overdo that joke. Hopefully they move onto other things. With the antagonist witches all transferring in, it’s looking like they might anyway.

It was pretty fun seeing Kagari being cool and the male main being the damsel in distress and even called “princess” on top of that. Well, seems like there’s something special about him, but I kind of hope they keep the current dynamic going and don’t start to switch it around at some point.

Nork22: This really. Not that it should surprise me as every anime fans have noted that male leads of harems as spineless wimps, I find this rather amusing. Yes… I can see this show going down the path of a harem show what with all them witches wanting to kidnap Honoka. And wait, Honoka is such a feminine name.

Sensuifu: They’re traps and they don’t even know it. Kidding aside, I do wonder where this show is heading. I wasn’t impressed with the rabbit warfare, which got a little annoying, though Kagari being so adamant about protecting Honoka could lead to an interesting development.

cxt217: I really do not know what to make of Episode 1. Maybe if I try to relate to it using known references – It is like Kannazuki no Miko, with less angst, and if one of the main characters was turned into a boy!

Really obnoxious fangirl fanclub, falling towers, an army of cabbits (I guess they are suppose to be rabbits, but they look more like cabbits.), the daughter of the school chairman who may be stalking you at every step, a boy being called ‘Princess,’ and a line-up of future chew-toys…I mean, witches, at the end of the episode….Everything feels very much like a dish that is being cooked even as it is being served. At least, it seems to be entertaining, despite the less than attractive character art. Plus, every time Kagari speaks, I am reminded of Lan from Lagrange, which makes sense.

This series could be really annoying or one of the more interesting series of this season.

Sly05: This is one of the two series I’ve been looking forward to the most this season as I’m a fan of the manga. Part of the draw of this series is its art design, especially the design of the witches. The transition to anime is okay and the CG isn’t quite as bad as I feared, but it still tends to look awkward against the 2d animation which is almost always the case when its used. In short, its serviceable.

The battle animation would benefit from being a bit more kinetic, and they kind of toned down Kagari’s appearance when she went all out on Tanpopo, but I think its probably more a move to save their budget bigger battles.

All around, an okay start. The scenes shown in the OP have my hopes up that we’ll get to some of the more interesting parts of the manga. I’m looking forward to when we start to see more of the witches and magic.

GingaDaiuchuu: Meh. It’s got some promise but also a lot that doesn’t thrill me. I feel like sticking with it, but it’s not the most necessary. We’ll see how it plays out. ED is somewhat hilarious, at least.

stardf29: The dynamic between Kagari and her “princess” Honoka is by far the most interesting part of the show right now. Everything else is just meh (except the nice fhana OP and that, uh, interesting ED).

Well, this show is directly competing against the other two sorcery-themed shows this season (Magical Warfare and Wizard Barristers), and if this first episode manages to not be the worst one of the three, it’ll get another episode. If not, it’s off to the guillotine for this show.

If it does survive, it’ll definitely be based on how well they can maintain and develop the relationship between the two main leads.

chidecki: I too was looking forward to this series as Kagari and her overall largeness looked interesting next to our feeble main male character. Nice fight scenes and the witch designs cancelled out the totally annoying and cloying ‘Princess’ fans. I’m intrigued where this show is leaning; comedy/action or action/comedy. I like how it switches from reality to fantasy at any given moment. As stoic as Kagari is, if her personality is such throughout the run I’ll tire of it pretty quickly. A good start so far.

bctaris: With Kagari being shown to clamp down on the behavior of at least the militant side of her fanclub later in the episode, I don’t think this is going to be too overplayed.

But then, I took this episode pretty easy, not really thinking about it. Thought it was pretty fun with the rabbits. And I appreciate just introducing all of the enemy witches at once. Even as, true, it hints at standard harem themes.

Hitsugi Amachi: I think I had a much more favorable take on this first episode than a lot of you, because I look at this as coming from the same Land of the Absurd that something like Kill la Kill comes from. Everything is so exaggerated, so over the top to the point that you’re supposed to roll your eyes and laugh at it (not with it). It’s ridiculous to the point of…absurdity.

And I’m okay with that.

But we have to see where it goes from here.

bctaris: But that ED is just great. I loved that. Favorite so far of the season.

Hitsugi Amachi: I found that ending torturous.
