Let the speculation bell ring as Andrew Garfield has indicated that he may not be up for the fourth installment of Amazing Spider-Man, which isn’t too much of a surprise since he’s only contracted for three.
“I mean I’m under contract for another one after this… as far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me,” he told Yahoo!. “But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world.”
Three is the norm when such contracts are drawn up, Marvel Studios notwithstanding with how theirs are done, so it’s not a surprise that he’s not signed up for the fourth installment that was announced. It’s also not a surprise that you can imagine Sony is fine with moving on to another actor, having largely succeeded in rebooting the material and looking more towards continuing on in the future without a relaunch/origin story as they’re talking about working with more of the stable of characters they have under their deal with Marvel and not focusing exclusively on Spider-Man himself all the time. Which is good, because we’d love a Black Cat movie, thank you very much.
Garfield did also talk a bit about the upcoming second installment a bit in regards to how they approached the first, which hopefully means we’ll get something a bit more interesting this time around, though I certainly enjoyed the first feature a lot.
“I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn’t on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air – How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through. Now we could say, ‘who is this guy?’ How can we best serve Spider-Man?'”
