CB: I haven’t had a chance to see PSYCHO-PASS yet as someone else on the team reviewed it. Can you sell it to someone in ten words or less?
GM: “Madoka Magica writer + Ghost in the Shell studio = Mind-blowing Sci-Fi.” I’m not counting the math symbols as words though. Is that cheating?
CB: Of the properties you manage, which one would you most like to see adapted into a Hollywood live action property, either a cable TV series or a theatrical feature?
GM: I’m going to start this answer off with a disclaimer: I have absolutely zero knowledge of what shows may or may not get adapted, blah blah blah, this is strictly what I’D personally love to see, etc. That said! Almost any of my action shows would be great; I could see Darker than Black, Black Lagoon, or PSYCHO-PASS having really strong adaptations. I think Eden of the East would be an especially good option—it’s a thriller, its characters aren’t in high school, and it’s just a really cool story. Though since it’s already a TV series and two movies I’m not sure which format I’d rather see it in—maybe a movie trilogy, or maybe a few seasons of a high-budget miniseries a la Game of Thrones or Walking Dead? I don’t know. Although the story revolves around situations in Japan and concepts that may not be too familiar out here, like hikikomori, I think the overall nature of the story is very accessible, plus the characters are fun.
But I don’t work in that field, so maybe there are reasons something like that couldn’t happen, I don’t really know. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing if the Monster TV series happens; it’s such a great series and Guillermo del Toro is an amazing director, so I really hope so!
