While there’s a good bit of controversy over the quality of the story, actions within the story and a wide divide between most critics and actual audience ranks (63% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes at last check versus an A- CinemaScore by regular movie attendees), Man of Steel certainly did well at the box office. Though it’s not an Iron Man 3, nor would it be considering that film was riding high off of Avengers, the film dominated the weekend with a $113 over the three day period plus another $12 million in the special Thursday night showings that were done for Walmart promotions. So a $125 million opening weekend domestically and $71 million overseas where it’s opened in only 25 territories so far, which will allow the cast and others to do more overseas press and promotion as it rolls out further.
The film sets the new June record opening, surpassing Toy Story 3 which had $110 million. And the film ranks fourth when it comes to non-sequels, though people are obviously kvetching about that listing a bit. This feature also did far better than Superman Returns back in 2006, which made $84 million over its five day opening weekend period.
The only other main new entry this weekend was This is the End, which was a fair bit of fun but just a bit too long overall, and with it opening on Wednesday to try and capture some of the post-college kids out there, it brought in $32 million over the weekend, which is what it’s production budget was. And other than Now You See Me, which we continue to highly recommend, everything else was single million digits this weekend as Man of Steel sucked out most of the oxygen across the screens.
