One of the first and biggest pieces of the new puzzle that is Star Wars: Episode VII has fallen into place as J.J. Abrams is in final negotiations to helm the picture that’s due in 2015. Abrams, currently wrapping up things for the May 2013 release of Star Trek Into Darkness, was heavily pursued by new Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams previously denied that he would take on the film, noting his vested interest in the Star Trek reboot universe he was involved in with Paramount, fell sway to Kennedy’s persuasive attempts.

The hunt for a director has been one of the more talked about things since Disney purchased Lucasfilm with an interesting and engaging line of directors being approached by Lucasfilm to see if things would work and an array of hopefuls by wishful fans. According to the Deadline report, Ben Affleck was also up for the position.
