Zack Snyder Developing Standalone ‘Star Wars’ Feature Based On ‘Seven Samurai’

2 min read

Star WarsWell, this is what I was waiting for.

A new report is out via Vulture that not only is Disney setting up for a new trilogy of Star Wars features that’s set to being release in 2015, they’re also following the Marvel Studios route of creating standalone and independent films within the Star Wars universe. Which is what I’ve always wanted since being a kid and had to “make do” with the comics, novels and videogames.

The kicker, which will be controversial to some but decidedly awesome to me, is that they’ve got Zack Snyder working up development for a standalone (i.e. unnumbered) feature that will be based off of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, which has been adapted many times over the years but very early on with The Magnificent Seven as a western.

Not a lot is known at this point but it’s being said that the feature will take place after Return of the Jedi and likely run parallel to the trilogy that’s in the works. The plot is just loosely based on Seven Samurai, and knowing what homages and influences that Kurosawa was in the original films and the blatant nod in the prequel series for one of the trailers, it makes a lot of sense to go this route. Snyder is attached to the development of this but not formally attached to directing anything at this point. He recently indicated that he was not interested in directing the new trilogy as a search for directors got underway, but it was noted by Lucas and Kennedy that there were a number of directors interested in working within the Star Wars universe.
