The end of the 2012 theatrical movie cycle has formally arrived and Rentrak has produced their breakdown of what happened over the year with the top twelve movies and a breakdown of the percentage of revenue the main distributors took in for it. Not surprisingly, the top-12 titles for 2012 based on consumer spending is pretty much a popularity contest and you’ll notice that very few of these are up for anything at the Academy Awards, often just hitting for technical reasons. The breakdown hits the international numbers, domestic numbers and the overall worldwide total. It’s interesting to see with some features the disparity between domestic and international releases, though the numbers for the top two filmes are surprisingly close. Also interesting is how Hunger Games, clocking in at number nine, did far better domestically than it did internationally, the only film to really do so.
