Having been out of the hentai manga game for a bit, getting back into it is something that I’ve looked forward to. And Enoki Tomoyuki’s first collected volume, With a Dictionary and No Skirt, is definitely the best way to do it. With ten stories to it, we get a good variety of tales that center around the school age mentality in a fun way as it moves between very different characters and situations. Tomoyuki has a good sense of style about him as we get panels that generally flow very well, dialogue that’s fun and character designs that are quite appealing. Tomoyuki also manages to produce some really good sex scenes without being hugely graphic or even sadistic, which is a welcome change of pace.
The opening story, Let’s Study, does well to kick the book off in the right direction as we get a pair of characters that are doing the heavy study thing for college entrance exams. It’s a fun relationship as the girl is easy-smart and oblivious to lots of things while the guy is struggling in so many ways and has to deal with her utter cuteness as well as the way she’s half naked most of the time. His struggles are fun to watch since he’s trying to be the good guy, but when it turns out she’s more than willing to help him study, for a price, her adorableness goes up several more notches. The story is straightforward but her character design really hits the right notes with the roundness of face and the eyes as well.
Another story plays in similar kinds of material as we get a young man named Sakaki who is friends with an attractive if prim and proper girl named Takatsuki. She’s all about college being focused on studying and education and is completely frustrated by how so many of her fellow students are just having sex constantly. Sakaki is kind of amused by it all since it just reinforces her moral side, but when the two of them walk in on a couple of other students having a good time, she realizes that she can’t really criticize properly without experiencing it herself. There’s a really cute shyness to her when they get down to business and with them playing up the look of her in that prim and proper mode just makes it all the more adorable.
Not all the stories are school themed, though school elements make their way into it. A fun one involves a young man who coaches a housewives basketball team for fun. He shows up to get things set up only to discover one of the new housewives there all wrapped up in the netting in a really sexual way, made more so by the fact that she’s wearing her old school bloomers. Nobody else seems to show up and things manage to turn in a more sexual way of course and the two go at it in a fun way. For him, it’s the allure of the bloomers to be sure and she definitely looks young, which comes across even mores strongly because of her petite nature and the whole hairstyle she has. There’s a cute little twist to it that you can see easily but it all comes together well.
My favorite story after the first one has to be Black and Pink as it introduces us to Koshiba, a young man who has a very fun girlfriend in Minaga, a woman who wears all black all the time and very basic clothes. When he ends up at her place at one point to help her out with some technical trouble for work, he’s shocked to find that in her wardrobe are an array of very appealing outfits. Outfits she never wears out because she feels that her height and body type keeps her from looking good in them. But Koshiba proves otherwise and really loves seeing her in all of them, and getting to look up a few of them as well. The two hit it off really well and are just a whole lot of fun to watch play together with her discovering that someone really likes her for how she looks.
In Summary
With a Dictionary and no Skirt is a pretty fun hentai manga as it deals with a wide variety of characters,a good number of them with an educational bent. Things are kept pretty much all consensual which is a definite plus here as everyone discovers what it is they like, but it will deviate a bit to certain types of fetishes as we do get one girl who likes to be berated and yelled at. Add in a stronger female character along the way and a lot in between and the collection left me pretty pleased. Tomoyuki has a good sense of panel placement and flow among them that makes for a very good read. Add in some great looking designs and a real sense of fun and intimacy about the sexual relationships and the title just hits all the right notes.
