‘Argo’ Grabs Top Spot At Box Office While ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ Sinks Like A Stone

2 min read

After holding the #2 spot for the two weeks its been out, Argo has made the surprise move to the first position, though it’s not a lot to really crow about. This past weekend should be the last of the lulls when it comes to the box office as things kick into higher gear next week with Flight and Wreck-It Ralph, the latter of which is hitting 3600 screens.  From there it’s on to Skyfall and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, both of which will perform strongly.

This weekend was just a mess though. Paranormal Activity 4 dropped a whopping 70% in its second week to hit under $9 million while Hotel Transylvania dropped only 26% in its 5ith week while adding more and more theaters to nab $9.5 million, giving it the #2 spot. It’s now made $130 million in the US and another $91 million worldwide. By next weekend it will surpass The Smurfs for Sony Pictuers Animation as their biggest release.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D did plain awful with just $8 million in its opening weekend with a $20 million budget, but it might have a little life left in it yet. Even worse is Alex Cross which has dropped 55% to the #9 spot in its second week with just $5 million.

And then there’s Cloud Atlass. With an unknown budget, Warner Bros. only paid $20 million for distribution rights to it in the US market and it brought in just under $10 million. The film is definitely not one that anyone realistically thought would go big, even with the talent attached, but it’s an expensive independent movie nonetheless. It has a ton of things working against it, from a 3 hour run time which limits it to three shows a day in many theaters to the R rating and the near impossible to describe in a 30 second TV spot premise. It doesn’t have any 3D to boost it up either and it hasn’t gotten an international release either to try and push it a bit more. That said, it was the first movie to get me into the theater since mid-August and it was wholly worth the trip.
