After a strong release with Snow White and the Huntsman, which drew in over $400 million and was pretty well split between men and women seeing it, there’s been a lot of attention as to where director Rupert Sanders will go. While a lot of attention was focused on the behind the scenes dalliances, there’s also a lot going on with his directorial progress. A sequel is in the planning stages but he’s not guaranteed to return. He’s been bandied about for a Van Helsing reboot with Tom Cruise already attached to it. And there’s all sorts of other little twists and turns along the way as well.
Instead, he’s gone in a completely different direction and is signing on with Sony Pictures to direct The Juliet, a science fiction romance story adapted from an Alfred Bester short story. No idea who Bester is? Check out his wiki. His novels have long been called either the great unfilmables or those that just can’t seem to get made, like the dream feature The Stars My Destination. Though there’s no details about which story is being adapted at this point, one curious nod on the net today indicates that it’s similar to a Bonnie and Clyde set in space. The feature certainly has its appeal for Sanders based on the demographics of his last outing since it would allow for both a strong male and female lead and draw in audiences that way.
