Details are really non-existent here and the devil can most certainly be in that. At the New York Comic-Con this weekend, while on panel for the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series, it was revealed that Clark Gregg will be reprising his role as Agent Coulson in the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series pilot that’s being developed for ABC. The pilot, potentially to be directed by Joss Whedon if time permits, is being written by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. The reveal came with a video played of Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon talking about Coulson being in the pilot. The news came amidst Jeph Loeb’s panel about the Ultimate Spider-Man series with Gregg showing up unexpectedly and having this tidbit to play.
What isn’t said yet, and is rather important, is exactly what the series focus will be. Gregg could simply be providing a flashback role in the pilot if it takes place in the present day post-Avengers continuity. If the series predates the movie, then he could have a fuller role in it as we see the development of the organization, the ground work laid out and some of the missions that have gone on. There’s simply too many unknowns at this point and a lack of clarity so far on what Gregg’s role in the pilot will be and if it’s set to be an ongoing role if it gets picked up to series.
