With Marvel Studios operating as they do, hearing that they’re looking to do casting for the 2015 release of Avengers 2 really shouldn’t be a surprise. The company invested early in bringing Jeremy Renner on board to play Hawkeye for the feature while seeding him in Thor, for example. The current rumor du jour, one that we’d love to see, is that Marvel Studios will be bringing Ms. Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her getting a decent sized role for Avengers 2. The character has been around for an age and gone through numerous changes, but she’s the type of strong female character that’s needed to help balance things out.
But why cast now? Look at the slate of movies that are in various stages of production. You can write off Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World for the most part, but sliding the character as a cameo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier certainly works. And with her comic book origin story, you can see how she may tie into the changes in the world as superheroes become real. Particularly with what potential may come from Guardians of the Galaxy with where they go for the aliens, such as if the Kree do show up and/or we find out about experimenting going on. Suffice to say, an early casting and seeding similar to Hawkeye can work.
One of the couple of front runners being talked about at the moment is Ruth Wilson from Luther, which you can see by comparison shot below. Hair color notwithstanding, since that’s so easy to change, she definitely could bring the character to life. With a role in The Lone Ranger coming up next year and a growing popular series in the UK, you can see Marvel looking at her as affordable, growable talent to use.
