KO on K-D: Gyebaek Episode 4 “Party Down!”

4 min read

When we last left off it looked like the Evil Prince was about to shoot the Good but pretending to be stupid Prince. Of course that would make for a short series, so he just succeeded in embarassing the Good Prince instead.

So it’s out for a night of drinking on the town!

Which of course means the tavern that Gye Baek works at. Laws of plot device, you know. The good Prince Uija gets outrageously drunk and passes out, so his attendant comes up with the clever and horribly dangerous plan of hiring Gye Baek to be his stand in at the Evil Queen’s birthday party.

At the same time, the lady love to be (oh come on, you know it to be true) Eungo is preparing to offer her expensive incense to the Queen to curry favor. Ah… Feudal society, the same the world over for thousands of years. Gye Baek finds himself in the perfect position to be a creep ass stalker and sets himself up to caress and smell her hand.

Well, the evil queen isn’t caring about birthday gifts today. She’s too busy getting ready to desecrate the sacred ground of the old dead queen’s pavillion. How so? Be executing a bunch of prisoners right in front of the party guests! Oh, but wait, one isn’t too happy about that and attacks… and Eungo jumps in front of the evil queen to protect her and curry favor.

And who jumps in to protect Eungo? Why, Gye Baek of course! And he totally blows his cover and well… where I have I seen this scene before. Wait, don’t tell me…

So now we have a huge problem. Either the Prince is going to be found responsible for the attack or Gye Baek. When in reality it was the King’s right hand man who came up with this plan. Someone is gonna have to take the fall, but we are supposed to be rooting for all these guys! OH, what to do…

While Gye Baek is up his family is home wondering where the hell he is. And yes, Mu Jin did marry the midwife. Her son mistakingly thinks Mu Jin is his father and can’t understand why daddy doesn’t care about him like he does Gye Baek.

I wonder who the kid’s real father was? Probably some shmuck that ran out on the midwife.

Well, we can’t have our hero die in episode four before he can live to get to the end of the flashback that is this series. Eungo leaps, reluctantly, to his rescue by coming to his defense in a showy show of wits that places her in the evil queen’s good graces!

Also, earlier in the episode was a strange disconnected interlude between two men. One was a guy who had escaped the purge of good queen supporters, but he was dying from TB or something and willing to take the fall for the failed assassination attempt. So, yeah for well timed coincidents!

Gye Baek is free to return to being a waiter. His lady love tries to pay him off, but he declines because all he wants is her love.

Elsewhere the evil ninja club…. er…. Purist Sect is plotting on hunting down the exiled supporters because they could be a security risk. And they have just the right man for the job! And exiled supporter who wants them all dead! This is why you don’t blind hire assassins!

As the episode ends, Gye Baek is about to walk in on his father leaving after getting his sword for the next assassin-ment that will get him closer to killing the purist leader. Not as dramatic as they make it out to be.

To Be Continued….
Gye Baek can be watched on Crunchyroll or Hulu. Hulu’s stream is 16 x 9 (I believe Crunchyroll’s free stream is 4 x 3). Each episode is a whopping 60+ minutes.
See you next episode!
