KO on K-D: Gyebaek Episode 3 “Time Makes All Wounds Worse”

4 min read

Good lord! Could the episode summaries be any more spoilery? Hulu, what are you doing?!?
When we last left out temporary protagonist Mu Jin and his wife, they were close to drowning and bleeding to death. The good queen had perished by her own hand rather than be exiled, and the prince was on his own. However, Mu Jin and his wife are able to surface and try to make their escape. It doesn’t go very well with their condition.

Back in the capital, the King is appropriately distraught.
He happily blames the correct person for his queen’s death, but unknown to him his evil wife’s goons are out searching for the prince. The prince isn’t a stupid kid though, he steals some clothes and makes his way back toward the capital.

Elsewhere things aren’t great for the heroic couple. Mu Jin’s wife has gone into labor but it’s not going well. And Mu Jin’s arm is infected and covered in maggots. Now, I’d like to think the writers had him screaming in pain from the wound/infection and that the maggots were put there to clean up the infected tissue on purpose… but the show isn’t that smart. HOWEVER, I choose to believe the scientific explanation.

Mu Jin lies to his wife about the gender of the child, of course. She wanted it to be a boy, he tells her it’s a girl thinking she would worry less. And… well… let’s just say it’s a good thing that Mu Jin was able to find a midwife who was still nursing her own child.

The prince is able to make it home, and the evil squad has no other option but to let the kid live since the populace is routing for the poor boy. At least the bitch queen believes Mu Jin and his wife dead.

14 Years Later…. damn! 14 years later!

We meet Gye Baek’s stepbrother, which…. means that Mu Jin remarried. The step brother is quite the smarmy businessman working as a waiter at a restaurant. Gye Baek is working there too, and he has a really stupid haircut.

He’s also enamored of a young woman who appears to be above his rather lowly station, and her spunky friend (because of course she has a goofy looking spunky friend to look better when standing next to) doesn’t like the kid much. Go figure.

Where’s Mu Jin-

Oh no…. he’s a drunk. And he lost that arm! OH….. .Mu Jin…. you used to be such a hot badass….
Also, your kid is starting stuff with the fat punk who sold his brother the shit tea and embarrassed him in front of the fancy girl. Gye Baek shows himself to be a leader early in life when he sets an impromptu trap for the goons and the swear allegiance to him.
The girl still hates him though.
Back in the palace, strange things are going on….

I refuse to believe Prince Uija grew up into this bumbling idiot who would kiss up to his enemy. The evil queen isn’t buying it either.

In the interim years Baekje was expanding as a nation with small attacks, and with the backing of China. The King still appears to have no real power in the shadow of his minsters. What can you do. It doesn’t look very good for any of the heroes.
Mu Jin is off drinking with his old friend, I think it’s the dude who made him his kick ass sword. Still bemoaning his dead wife. Although…. he does go and get his sword from a shrine and head out into the night. Hmm! It looks like he’s still hunting the purists!

And he can still kick ass with one arm. Nice.
So we leave off with Gye Baek with his own gang, Mu Jin getting closer to the purists, and the evil queen plotting to make a scene and desecrate the former first queen’s memory at the same time. Oh, and the evil queen’s evil son might be about to shoot Prince Uija while out hunting. Uh oh.

To Be Continued….
Gye Baek can be watched on Crunchyroll or Hulu. Hulu’s stream is 16 x 9 (I believe Crunchyroll’s free stream is 4 x 3). Each episode is a whopping 60+ minutes.

See you next episode!
