‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Claims Top Spot For Weak Weekend

2 min read

With the results for this weekend in and it showing a 20% drop from the same time last year, it’s for a couple of interesting reasons. While Resident Evil: Retribution is opening less than Aftermath did in the same time period two years ago by ten million, there’s also a good drop in a different area. This weekend saw the release of Finding Nemo in 3D which is trying to recapture what The Lion King did last year. That film opened much stronger while Finding Nemo did just $18 million overall. Which certainly isn’t bad, especially as Pixar is saying that it only cost $5 million to do the conversion. And like Resident Evil: Retribution, it’ll do better overseas where cinemas have expanded and 3D is bringing in a lot of people. Resident Evil: Retribution did far better overseas this weekend, hitting $50 million, so the film is set to do on par with Aftermath, which brought in $236 over its full theatrical run.

The big talk for the weekend though is The Master from Paul Thomas Anderson, which didn’t even chart. The film opened on five theaters and brought in $730,000, which is a new record.

Beyond that, it’s pretty much another dud of a weekend with little to really motivate people to go out and spend the money.
