With the numbers held until late Monday night out of respect for the tragedy during the midnight showing on Friday morning, the results have finally come in and it’s pretty damn impressive for The Dark Knight Rises. The film had taken in $30 million in its midnight showings alone on premiere night and that was hugely impressive, which lead to a $161 million weekend opening. For a 2D movie with a runtime of just under three hours. While IMAX theaters boosted the revenues a bit, it’s nowhere in the same league that a 3D showing would increase it nor with a shorter run time. Most multiplexes gave over a large number of screens for it, bringing it in at 4404 screens total, which is also pretty impressive.
The feature did pretty much suck the wind out of the environment when it came to other movies with the majority barely hitting $5 million and only a few getting into double digits. Suffice to say, Christopher Nolan has has concluded his trilogy well.
