When it comes to famous names in anime and manga, there are a few that top the list like the obvious Osamu Tezuka and Hayao Miyazaki. One that has always felt integral to me, though perhaps a bit more on the outside for some audiences, is that of Shotaro Ishinomori. The man left behind an impressive array of work when he dies back in 1998 which has seen numerous adaptations and interpretations both during his life and afterward. The latest is this 2012 movie, due out in October in Japan across several areas in Asia outside of Japan, is 009 Re:Cyborg, a full length feature film done by Kenji Kamiyama which is also being done in 3D, a first for the director. Production I.G. is doing the animation work along with SANZIGEN Animation. Knowing the international popularity of Ishinomori as well as Kamiyama’s own experience with it, the studio has put out a four minute promotional video for the international market so as to build some anticipation, which I think it does to excellent measure and has us hoping for a strong and quick license/distribution here.
Plot Concept (Manga): The Black Ghost organization transforms nine unsuspecting humans into cyborgs. However, the nine cyborgs turn on their masters and protect the rest of humanity from Black Ghost’s plans for world war.
