Cameron Still Plans ‘Battle Angel’ Movie

2 min read

Thankfully for most fans, the majority of anime or manga to Hollywood adaptations continue to be small and end violent deaths over a period of time without being made. One that has had people intrigued for a long time but have largely felt won’t happen is that of Battle Angel as it had James Cameron behind it. While he had talked it up a fair bit during pre-production of Avatar and during production, it’s been felt that he won’t ever really get to it, especially with a back to back pair of sequels in the works that are expected now for 2015.

The folks at MTV managed to pose the question to him again about chances for the film and whether he still intends to do it since we haven’t heard about it for a bit. The gist of it is that he still has it, still wants to do it, but it’s so far down the road that it’s just kind of silly to think about.

“‘Battle Angel’ is just a great, kick-ass story,” says Cameron, “…“[But] I see the good that the ‘Avatar’ franchise can do in terms of keeping a world audience cognizant of our relationship with nature, but doing it in an entertainment context. Ultimately, I think there’s more good to be done there than with ‘Battle Angel’.”

The most recent screenplay to be talked about for the film has the first three volumes of the manga series telling the tale for the movie and Cameron was asked whether he’d let someone else tackle it. His response basically proves that like Titanic, it’s a labor of love that he will not let go of until he can do it himself in the way he envisions.

“It would have to be pried out of my cold, dead fingers,” he laughs, “but on the other hand I don’t want to take it to my grave, either.”

Unfortunately, it seems like the continued ownership of this for the theatrical side has kept the anime OVAs out of circulation for far too many years as once ADV Films had it and then pulled it years ago, it’s not been seen since. Viz Media continues to retain the rights to the manga.

Plot Concept: Beautiful Alita has lost all memory of her past life, except for the Panzer Kunst, the most powerful cyborg fighting technique ever known. But in the harsh world of the Scrapyard, governed by Tiphares, the utopian city in the sky, every day is a struggle for survival…

  1. The changing of names, and the possibility they’ll infect whatever movie he produces, just makes me hate Viz even more.
