‘The Mummy’ To Rise Again With Reboot

2 min read

Sometimes you just can’t keep a franchise down and there are plenty of jokes to make with this one. After the original 1999 outing and then a 2001 romp which eventually lead to the 2008 finale, Universal is setting the stage to bring their monster classic back once again with a new approach. The Mummy is the kind of feature that you can’t hold against Universal for trying, much like the other in their monsters gallery of creatures, simply because it is so iconic and there are multiple opportunities to make it work. While the sequels may have fallen flat, the 1999 feature certainly had its charms.

So what does Universal have in store? At the moment, not a lot, but according to Variety they’ve tapped Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaights to work on the screenplay. He’s got the quote in there that at least shows some hope. “I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before.”

In honor of this development, check out some of the past Mummy trailers:

Of course, these movies also begat us:

Which is why we hope that Spaights goes back to this:

Though I do think we’re ripe for this to be made again… if we had a modern version of Abbott and Costello…
