Joss Whedon Talks Iron Man Design, ‘Avengers’ Sequel

2 min read

There’s a good, long and interesting run up in the marketing area for the May 4th release of  The Avengers and a pair of new items have surfaced today out of the UK as Joss Whedon makes the rounds there. The first bit comes from an interview where he’s asked about how one might up the ante for a sequel considering how “world shattering” this one is with the scale of the threat involved. While absolutely nothing has been said about a sequel yet, you know Marvel’s got ideas about it and with the general buzz on this one and the way it’s now the most viewed trailer on iTunes, they’ll hopefully pay attention to what Whedon says.

“I want to know what makes them tick, what makes them flawed, what makes them fight – and ultimately, what makes them awesome,” Whedon says of his superhero team. ” I go to these movies for those moments when the heroes define themselves, either through action or deliciously overwritten speeches.”

With a sequel, how can you top it?

“By not trying to. By being smaller. More personal, more painful… By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself.”

In regards to Iron Man, he’s gotten quizzed about the differences in the armor design across the existing movies and what’s in this one and has a spot of fun with it in this short clip:
