While it may not have gotten the genre audience terribly thrilled, the 2007 release of I Am Legend did good business. Really good business. On a budget of $150 million, it may $585 million theatrically worldwide before taking into account home video and other distribution models. So while it’s been five years since it hit, it’s not a surprise that they’re looking to add a bit more to that world as Warner Bros has signed off with the producers behind the original to do another installment. They know they need to recapture what was in the first one so there’s the intention of going after Will Smith again to carry the film. And unlike the rumors that have circulated for awhile, the new script by Arash Amel isn’t going to be a prequel. Of course, based on the events of the previous film, it can’t be a sequel either, so it’ll be interesting to see where they end up deciding to go with it.
I Am Legend Plot Concept: Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague — The Infected — lurk in the shadows… watching Neville’s every move… waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind’s last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered… and quickly running out of time.
