Star Wars Thursday: A Work Of Art Edition

2 min read

Welcome to this week’s edition of Star Wars Thursday, a celebration of all things fun, wild, and wacky in the Star Wars universe!

First, I’d like to thank @jtabrys for tweeting out this photo. What better trigger for my weekly post than the fun image of Han as Bob along with my memories of his “happy trees”? (I couldn’t find a direct source for the Han Solo Bob image, so if you know who created it please leave a comment!) Happy trees made Bob happy, and Star Wars makes me happy. So this week I scoured the internet to find images of Star Wars made into “hoity toity art”.

I uncovered this old contest on the SomethingAwful.com site. Contributors took classic art and edited in Star Wars characters for an updated, science fiction look. There are ten pages of images – some more amazing than others. One of my favorites is the Greedo version of “Death of Marat”. All it needs is a big sign that tells us who shot first. Darth Maul shows up as an American Founding Father, daVinci style Star Wars sketches appear, and Leia is the Waterhouse “Lady of Shalott”.

The following Darth Vader art, which was created by the Deviant Artist “ijacker” in 2009, is a tribute to the fantasy art called “Death Dealer” by Frank Frazetta. You can see the original here.

Okay, I know you need more art. If you are looking for artwork that showcases the whole amazing Star Wars Universe, in a wide variety of artistic styles, check out the book Star Wars Art: Visions. It makes me wish I had the artistic talent to try my own hand at drawing some of my own favorite characters. I own this book, and it’s a great coffee table book. Maybe it’ll even get a few more people to check out Star Wars.

That’s it for this week’s edition of Star Wars Thursday. What will next week bring? Who can tell? “Always in motion is the future.” Until then, may the Force be with you!
