With plenty of options in place for the actors and the fact that the film made $353 million theatrically alone on a budget of about $150 million, it was no surprise that there’d be at least one if not two more X-Men: First Class sequels. The uncertainty was whether they’d get Matthew Vaugh back to direct, especially since he landed the gig for the first one in very short order and had an intense shooting schedule to make the opening date that Fox had previously set. It looks like that’s going to be a bit easier this time around as he’s signed on formally to come back for another round and will be directing based on a script by Simon Kinberh, who wrote X-Men: The Last Stand and will be produced by Bryan Singer again. For some, it will be surprised to see that Jane Goldman isn’t signing n to work the screenplay, but she had previously stated that she wouldn’t as there were other commitments she wanted to focus on.
No word on what the storyline will be at this point of course, but it has the potential to move the date the feature takes place in forward a bit, though there are fun things that can be dealt with in short form. As the folks at Collider noted, “Vaughn said in May that he would like the second movie would open with the JFK assassination and Magneto controlling the “magic bullet”. Indulging conspiracy theorists aside, I’m curious to see which new mutants will the fray. If the movie is set in 1963, it’s probably too early to see Cyclops and Jean Grey kicking around Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.”
