Squid Girl Season 2 Episode #09 Anime Review

4 min read

The invasion continues on and may happen better now that Squid Girl has learned about day planners.

What They Say:
Squid Girl is the dad, Eiko is the mom, Sane is the other woman, and Kiyomi is the other other woman who is pregnant… This is getting weird. When Chizuru and Eiko give Squid Girl a bag and planner, she turns to Kiyomi to how use them. This will be Squid Girls first time at the amusement park and the last time.

Squid Girl’s fitting in with normal people hasn’t been something that has always gone smoothly, but she’s definitely found her place easier than some other would be invaders might. Her setting up in the beach shop alone has made for a lot of fun. So when she gets caught up in a pretend situation with eiko and Sanae along with Kiyomi, it just goes weirdly amusing as they play house together and the situations are all over the top. It’s the kind of gag section where Squid Girl herself is practically the least outrageous of them all. Sanae really takes the cake here as she goes completely over the top and Kiyomi plays the straight man for a lot of it, going so far as to take on the role of the other woman that arrives on the scene with big revelations. Watching everyone else act, good and bad, with Squid Girl trying to decide the right path as the “dad” is just a lot of goofy fun.

The second story is one that I really have to like in just the basic idea of it as Squid Girl is given a planner and a bag to keep track of things that she has going on. Since she is, in essence, a kid, I love that she went right to the planner and worked on it like most kids do. Now that she has a bag as well, she sees them everywhere and starts to learn more uses about them which excites her even more. She goes over the top with it by scheduling things like bathroom breaks for herself, especially when she brings in an alarm clock so she can time everything down to the minute. It’s the kind of attention to detail that is very much in her personality and is very cutely done here as she interacts with everyone and gets a better idea about how others schedule their time.

While the episode isn’t a laugh out loud piece overall, the third one has some very good fun as Squid Girl gets introduced to something new in the form of an amusement park. Not a very good one of course as there aren’t that many things to do overall as it’s a park that has been consumed by other things over the years so the girls childhood memories aren’t what matched by reality. But they have some good fun with it as they make the best of a bad situation and even Squid Girl gets into the whole tea cup ride really well. And even as there’s little to the park overall, everyone gets completely exhausted which is its own special brand of fun. There’s a lot to like with this part because we do get a good look at the family members pasts when they were kids and that only serves to make them more endearing.

In Summary:
Squid Girl doesn’t light up the laughter track here that much but it has a number of fun segments and very cute character interactions that make you smile and grow your fondness for the characters themselves. Squid Girl herself is of course dominant and I think the day planner segment was the best for her, but there’s something to be said for the silly way the opening skit is with the fake family being done and how Kiyomi takes it to a whole other level. The series is one that does well even when you don’t have bust a gut humor involved with it and this episode showcases that well. They may not be hugely memorable, but they do leave you with a warm feeling and plenty of smiles.
