Majikoi Oh! Samurai Girls Episode #08 Anime Review

3 min read

The fight continues as the other girls get involved, in between silly attempts at introducing more story elements.

What They Say:
A big fight ensues, as Tachibana Takae and Kawakami Momoyo really start to go at it. Meanwhile, the plot finally start to unfold and we get a glimpse into what has been going on. But even with the Yamato and the girls helping Momoyo during the fight, Takae doesn’t seem to be going down…

The Review:

While a lot of the previous episode focused on Momoyo, it didn’t focus on her in an interesting or fun way and sort of left me feeling rather bland about her. When it went to make things into a big fight at the end with the introduction of Takae, it didn’t exactly excite all that much either. While I like what the show can do with its fight scenes, it’s more towards the larger Kawakami battles that I enjoy as we saw in the first episode or the more comical stuff from the mushroom festival. The action for it at the start here is fun and well done with its visual presentation, but the core connection with the characters isn’t even paper thin at this point so that makes it hard to really rally behind.

While there’s a period of dialogue and exposition that rather bored the pants off of me, the show does provide for some good action elsewhere as Takae ends up going against the rest of the women as lead by Yamato. This brings us closer to what we had at the start of the series and lets us see how everyone has grown and how differently they fight when it’s not the same kind of battle. The observational aspect of the episode works well on top of this as we get a bit of commentary about how the group has improved overall. But at the same time, there’s also some good humor to it as everyone attacks and gets involved in doing what they can to help out Momoyo, even if it is for Yamato.

In Summary:
There’s a whole lot of exposition going on here in general that follows up the action as it deals with the apparent larger storyline going on. Unfortunately, this is one of series where I have to admit that the whole supposed big picture plot just doesn’t mean much to me. They bring in a variety of intrigue and politics bits, highlighting the JSDF, police and more, but it’s all just noise that slows down what the episode is good at. The action. Though the bulk of the girls don’t get a lot of attention, it does work well overall as they all play a part while supporting Momoyo in her battle. And it’s the kind of wacky and over the top piece that fits with the show in its basic violence where nobody truly gets hurt, even as the bullets fly and lots and lots of hits are landed on each other. Majikoi Oh still has managed to miss the mark in being a fun show overall, but it’s mostly just a base kind of pleasure that I get from it and this episode kind of delivers on that.
