Green Lantern Corps #2 Review

3 min read

Green Lanterns being murdered, whole planets being destroyed, the who and why is teased with a serious throw-down!

What They Say:
Guy Gardner and John Stewart lead a squadron of Green Lanterns to fight a mysterious force that is marching across the space sectors and devouring not only their natural resources but also their entire populations. Worst of all, those responsible have a vendetta against the Green Lantern Corps!

The Review:
Green Lantern Crops knows exactly why it’s a good comic and delivers more of those elements with issue #2. After discovering the deaths of fellow Green Lanterns and an entire planet’s population wiped out, Green Lanterns Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Sheriff, Isamot, Hannu, and Vandor head to the planet Xabas where a similar energy signal has been detected. While attempting to save the people of Xabas and destroy whatever the strange anomaly absorbing the trees of the planet is, a group of enemies appear from within the anomaly. What proceeds is 10+ pages of fighting. The fights are choreographed really well without feeling static. For some unexplained reason, these enemies are not affected by the power rings and because of the viciousness seen previously, there is an added element of suspense in how the fight will turn out.

GLC has never shined away from killing off characters. Sure there are certain characters, *cough* Guy, John *cough* that we know will be OK, but there is still no guarantee. That is one of the reasons the fights are so involving and exciting: you never know just how things are going to turn out and the fights are typically drawn extremely well. Another fantastic element of GLC is the fact that the characters are not the best of the best. They aren’t the greatest GLs ever and have so much experience and skill that all the fun is taken away with minor events. These GLs are just ordinary GLs. GLC is more of a cop series than GL series because it takes ordinary GL cops and gives them cases that require them to think like cops and take risks. We as readers feel these risks with each page. Just like in real life, cops aren’t guaranteed a positive outcome and things can go from bad to worse in the blink of an eye. That is what we are given with issue #2, a murder mystery that gets curiouser and curiouser, a real element of danger, wonderful fight scenes, and fantastic characters and settings that cover a wide range of personalities and show a real sense of imagination. Recommended.

In Summary:
GLC is not a straight brawler comic but it features more fights per page than most, if not all, the other comics out there. There is character drama, useful dialogue, and a sense of gritty realism that when paired with is completely unrealistic and fantastic characters and settings, make for pure entertainment that doesn’t let down or disappoint. The only real flaw I can see with this series is the level of violence. Not exactly ideal material for kids but the quality in the story should allow adults to feel comfortable reading intergalactic police drama. Did I say recommended!?
