Flashpoint: Lois Lane And The Resistance #2 Review

4 min read

Nothing goes according to plan here, not that it’s the first time for Grifter or Lois Lane.

What They Say:
FLASH QUESTION: Lois Lane meets the mysterious leader of the Resistance – but will she survive?

The Review:
The opening salvo for Lois Lane and the Resistance wasn’t exactly a sterling effort, though I liked the idea of the whole behind enemy lines and getting caught up in events so that she reports on the story angle. The book had a pretty disjointed feeling to it as it unfolded and some really wonky moments where things just didn’t work right. But it dealt with a bit of the fallout from how things went down in Paris and went into how the Amazons have worked things over with their new land. I’m generally a fan of Lois Lane and especially when she’s more proactive with things and gets involved in the story so there were things that I liked about it, though I really didn’t care for how easily she ended up working with the resistance.

With as much ground as it had to cover, it left things in a bad spot when it ended since we had her being saved by Penny Black who was on her way to meet Grifter. This book picks up with Grifter and his group that’s formed a resistance there and they’re pretty unhappy with how things have worked out since the Furies have shown up where Black was supposed to be and that’s lead to quite the fight. There’s some good action to it here as it Grifter and his group fight back since they’re a pretty diverse lineup. Grifter is pretty solid himself and a known commodity, but it’s the fun of watching Etrigan and the Cricket that ratchets it up a bit. Etrigan’s long been a favorite so it’s good to see him pulling his weight on a team format here, even briefly.

Grifter does bring some back story to the issue as he gets to detail to Lane how they all came together when he does catch up with her in his pursuit of Black. This has some fun to it as we see him on Team 7 in Afghanistan leading a pretty diverse group of people on a mission that ended with him being the only survivor, and that only because Penny Black got involved with her techno suit. A suit that ended up causing him to bond with her in a way that gets him to seek her out, which lead to him coming to England just as the Amazons invaded. It’s an interesting group that he had put together for Team 7 and it really feels like it merits a lot more exploration since there’s some fun elements to it. But like the previous issue, it’s just so much different material being put together here and a less than compelling story focusing around Lois who is barely in it that it doesn’t really stand well.

Digital Notes:
This digital edition of Lois Lane and the Resistance from Comixology features just the first printing cover of the issue with no additional extras included in the book.

In Summary:
Lois Lane and the Resistance has a lot of potential to it but it continues to fail to capitalize on it. Having someone on the inside could be played well, both as how she handles her time with the Amazons and as a member of the resistance, but neither side gets treated well here. She herself isn’t in the book all that much and is in pretty much supporting cast mode so there isn’t a lot to offer. Grifter himself stands out well though and offers up a good group to work as the resistance and they’d certainly be fun to watch a bit more in action. But it’s the Team 7 group that left me the most interested in seeing it explored. It’s unfortunate that it works out like that because of the potential the book has, but at least there’s some glimmers in here to enjoy.
