NPR ran their annual poll with its readers to see what the top hundred science fiction and fantasy books would be and they got over 60,000 ballots in that they worked on sorting through. The results have made their way online and we’ve got the top hundred books here. Not surprisingly, a lot of older books dominate the list in the uppermost sections, books that have been considered “the best” for decades, and that’s causing the usual round of hairpulling and teeth gnashing about what good really means, if it holds up and so forth. Particularly getting attention amongst the twitter set is just how much Asimov has on the list, particularly with the Foundation books, which leads to some interesting discussions about context of when books were created, different formats (his early works in magazines compared to the later books by other prominent classic SF authors that worked solely in novel form) and to the works of others in the last few years.
