One of the fun parts of this time of year is that we do start to get a look at some of the non-summer blockbuster genre movies that will arrive later in the year. They do tend to be a little different, though there is always the hope for another Avatar out there. One that is just starting to get a bit more attention, and will have a presentation at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, is The Darkest Hour. The film is set to land on December 23rd with its alien invasion angle starring Emile Hirsch, with the first image provided today. This one, from Summit Entertainment, has definitely caught my eye previously as it does one thing differently than most alien invasion films we see. It takes place in Moscow, owing to it being produced by Timur Bekmambetov, a filmmaker that I rather like. It’s being directed by Chris Gorak, who has served as an art director on some very good films over the years, and directed Right At Your Door back in 2006. The $40 million budget feature stars Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Rachael Taylor, Joel Kinnaman, Max Minghella and Greg Kinnear.
Plot concept: THE DARKEST HOUR follows five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack. The 3D action-thriller highlights the classic beauty of Moscow alongside mind-blowing special effects from the minds of visionary filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (WANTED, NIGHT WATCH) and director Chris Gorak.
