Summer 2011 Anime Preview: No. 6

2 min read

Some shows have just a very simple premise to them that makes you wonder why it was greenlit in the first place. With No. 6, that can definitely be felt as the basic idea is that it’s about a young boy that lives in a futuristic society where he ends up rescuing another boy on the run from the city’s security force only to have it alter everything about his own life. What one can learn though when reading something so basic is that because it’s on the noitaminA block which has produced some dazzling shows like C and Princess Jellyfish and the likely popular Bunny Drop that’s coming up alongside this. No. 6 is a new original series that is also seeing a manga serialization in ARIA by Atsuko Asano while BONES will be handling the animation on this new shows. No episode count has been provided so far, but considering the generally short run that shows in this block have, it’s not expected to be a lengthy piece and is far more likely to be a solid self-contained show.

The series is being directed by Kenji Nagasaki, who has worked largely as an episode director prior to this series but it’s been across a variety of shows, from Oh! Edo Rocket to Hanamaru Kindergarten. The series script is being handled by Seishi Minakami who has quite a variety to his work as well, such as the overall composition of Daphne in the Brilliant Blue to Paranoia Agent. Throw in work on Occult Academy and Paprika and a smattering of episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and you can get an idea of the kind of pacing and structure he works with and will deal with when it comes to No. 6. The character designs for the series, which noitaminaA shows typically diverge a bit from the norm with, are being done by Satoshi Ishino. Ishino has a lot of time spent as an animation director but has done character design work before as well with shows such as Excel Saga, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu and Puni Puni Poemy.
