Tohru Fujisawa fans rejoice as Ed Chavez, the marketing director for Vertical, Inc, announced via the latest ANNCast that the publisher will be picking up and releasing the manga series Shonan Junai-gumi and Shonan 14 Days. The publisher plans to do an alternating release for the books starting in January 2012 where Shonan 14 Days will be released on the odd numbered months and Shonan Junai-gumi will be released on the even days. The conversation did turn to the GTO series itself, of which the two newly licensed books serve as the bookends to, and it was said that all of this came prior to TOKYOPOP’s closure announcement but that if these books do well, it’d certainly be something they look at. Shonan Junai-gumi previously saw print by TOKOYPOP several years ago as GTO: The Early Years but it and the original GTO series are now fully out of print.
Shonan Junai-gumi ran from 1990 to 1996 and had thirty one volumes to its name and even spawned a five episode OVA series and a live action movie in the mid 90’s. GTO: Shonan 14 Days began release in 2009 and the sixth volume was released earlier this year.
