Pixar Shows Off New ‘Brave’ Pictures, New Lead Actress

2 min read

Entertainment Weekly managed to get a look at three new stills from the next Pixar movie due out in 2012 with Brave. The June 22nd feature is something new for the company that’s always challenging its productions, this time going with a female lead character and having the feature co-directed by a woman, both of which are firsts for them. Pixar is playing the safe game this year with Cars 2 and their last real challenge was with Wall-E where you had a movie that spent the first quarter or so without any dialogue. Brave also apparently has a bit of a change to its cast as well as EW is reporting that Reese Witherspoon is off of the project as the lead character Merida due to scheduling issues and that Kelly Macdonald will take on the role instead.

Brave will be directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman.

Plot summaryBrave is set in the mystical Scottish Highlands, where Merida is the princess of a kingdom ruled by King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). An unruly daughter and an accomplished archer, Merida one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. In an attempt to set things right, Merida seeks out an eccentric old Wise Woman (Julie Walters) and is granted an ill-fated wish. Also figuring into Merida’s quest — and serving as comic relief — are the kingdom’s three lords: the enormous Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), the surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson), and the disagreeable Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane).
