Production company Circle of Confusion is aiming for a three-fer this year with word that the company will be involved in the production of Chew, a new series for Showtime whose scripts have been picked up for a series. Circle of Confusion was one of the producers for AMC’s The Walking Dead and is involved in the pilot being worked on for FX with Powers based on the comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Avon Oeming. Chew marks their third comics foray for a third channel as Showtime is keen on the show as they continue to produce more original works in order to attract subscribers (and as they’re minimizing what shows up on streaming services like Netflix, in order to shore up their pay channel subs).
The project has some good credentials behind it already as Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Stephen Hopkins of Californication and Shameless will serve as a director for the half hour show as well as an executive producer.
The first issue of Chew can be read on the comiXology service for free if you’re a registered member.
Comic plot summary: Tony Chu is a cop with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. It’s a dirty job, and Tony has to eat terrible things in the name of justice. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the government has figured out Tony Chu’s secret. They have plans for him, whether he likes it or not.
