Jennifer Lawrence Closing In On ‘Hunger Games’

2 min read

It looks like Jennifer Lawrence is the top contender at this point for the role of Katniss in the theatrical adaptation of the young adult science fiction/adventure novel Hunger Games. The book, written by Suzanne Collins back in 2008, was very well received by critics and won several awards both in 2008 and 2009 across a number of publications. Jennifer Lawrence herself has been receiving all sorts of awards and nominations herself for her role as Ree DOlly in the 2010 release of the Winter’s Bone movie and is garnering attention from genre fans for her upcoming performance as Mystique in the period piece X-Men: First Class. She has several projects she’s in the middle of at the moment with three features set for release this year and another that’s now in post-production for 2012, which gives her plenty of room to get into something new with franchise potential as there is a trilogy of books.

The planned feature has the screenplay by Billy Ray with Gary Ross set to direct this spring/summer if everything can come together for Lionsgate. They have a tentative March 23, 2012 release date planned.

Book plot concept: In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in the Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimdations of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch.
