While the main casting has been isolated for awhile, some of the smaller roles that fans get all excited about haven’t been as clear since there are so many characters that can make a cameo which won’t mean anything to your casual viewer. Case in point is Derek Luke, who has been attached to the movie for awhile. According to BlackFilm, Luke will play the role of Gave Jones, one of the Howling Commandos of World War II that have long been a part of comics history.
In the Marvel comics world, Gabe Jones was the first African-American to serve in an integrated military unit during World War II. Later in the continuity, he ends up as one of Fury’s trusted men at the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization. Of course, in the comics, Nick Fury himself was originally white and only became based on Samuel L. Jackson during the Ultimates incarnation of the Marvel Universe, so this could throw a small wrench into the hopes of some that we’ll see Fury in WWII like we did with the comics.
