With all the news out and about today about the iPad 2, there is some interesting comics news for the digital format as Erik Larsen has decided to go same-day digital with Savage Dragon. There’s a catch though, there’s always a catch. Because of how Apple prices their digital products, ending only in .99 and not anything else, Savage Dragon has to deal with its print version being priced at $3.50 and making sure it doesn’t annoy fans or annoy retailers by pricing higher or lower.
So what do they do? They went for the $3.99 price point for the latest issue and then when the new issue comes out the following month, the previous issue will drop to $1.99. So if you need your same-day digital Savage Dragon, you’ll have to pony up an extra 49 cents. Though if you’re going to most comic book shops and have a pull list, odds are you’re getting a discount of some sort, so going same-day will likely cost you around a buck more than the print, if not more depending on how much you buy and how large your discount is.
If you can wait a month, it’s definitely a better deal at $1.99 for an issue, but our feelings continue to be that $1.99 is the price point most digital comics should be at for all new issues of standard sized releases.
Savage Dragon #169 was the most issue released on February 23rd and list for $3.99.
