The Weekly TV Discussion Post For September 9th, 2018

Sneaking time for TV is far easier than for a movie so there’s a good bit that I soak up. While I do background shuffle rotation of sitcoms throughout the workday (Modern FamilyParks and RecArrested Development, Coupling and more) I do most of my viewing in the evenings. Last weekend had the kids and I finishing off Runaways first season and we kind of punted from there in terms of group viewing. That let me get a few other shows wrapped up that I was pleased to get done as the fall season is closing in on ous.

First, I finally got to the last two episodes of Disenchantment. I enjoyed the show a good deal overall but it really solidified as it went on and the last two delivered a lot of good story points amid the humor and weirdness. I’m on board for more.

I also finished off the last couple of episodes of Deadwind. While I don’t think it’ll be that memorable overall for me unlike some other crime dramas from overseas, it was an engaging enough watch that made for a good story.

I did take a detour for something more real world as I saw that the second season of three episodes arrived for The Investigator: A British Crime Story. I tend to not do these kinds of shows regardless of where they’re from but the first season last year was pretty interesting to get an idea of real world stuff. This one wasn’t as interesting but still compelling as a single case begins to lead to new questions and potential answers about a serial killer.

Friday also saw the launch of the second season of Iron Fist. Yeah, the first season was pretty trashy with its high viewership ratings according to Netflix but there were things I liked amid all that I disliked in that season. The character got some minor rehabilitation in The Defenders and I really enjoyed his appearance in the second season of Luke Cage for an episode. With this season, a new showrunner is helping to smooth things out some and it feels like it’s moving in a better direction, though not without its usual cliches and tropes being applied. It’s only a ten episode season so that helps a lot and the first two episodes were pretty fun.

My TiVo didn’t get to much use this past week but I’m keeping up well on Fear the Walking Dead, even if I wish they’d do more serialized storytelling at the same time instead of these almost-bottle episodes. Beyond that, it was some fun new Whose Line is it Anyway? and a new episode of Property Brothers because I love my HGTV.
