With just an incredible 10% drop from the previous weekend which already had an amazing 5% drop from its opening weekend, Crazy Rich Asians took the top spot once again with a $22 million take. With the weekday numbers still doing well, the film is now at $111 million domestic and looking to roll right along for awhile yet. With this also a holiday weekend, the Monday numbers should be good for the overall four-day weekend in that regard.
This weekend saw folks heading out to see more films from earlier in the month than new ones as The Meg took second place with another $10 million to bring it to $120 million domestic while adding another $17 million overseas where it’s made $342 million so far. Or a combined worldwide take of $463 million for a film oh so many mocked from the first teaser.
Also making a good appearance was Mission: Impossible – Fallout as it added another $7 million to grab third place and crossing the $200 million mark domestically while its overseas take is at $443 million.
New films this weekend are expansions that went wider with Operation Finale bringing in $6 million while Searching hits $5.7 million.
A few films like M:I Fallout crossed some good marks this weekend even with just small takes, such as Incredibles 2 breaking $600 million domestic and The Equalizer 2 making it over the $100 million mark even if it didn’t break into the top twelve.
Ant-Man and the Wasp has a good debut previously in China but it’s now cross the $100 million mark there, which if there’s a third will likely have a lot more to do in China the next time around as it’s doing better than the majority of the Marvel films released there over the past decade. It’s also worth noting with the two films it’s now a $1 billion franchise worldwide as the first did $519 million total and this one did $594 million.
Smaller box office takes are going to be the norm for the next several weeks at least as we get into some of the minor prestige films ahead of the big push closer to Thanksgiving and Christmas. We also don’t have a lot in the way of big films dropping overall, such as no Marvel films this year and only Aquaman closer to the end of the year.
Next week brings out The Nun in 3,700 screens from Warner Bros under New Line while STX brings out Peppermintin 2,800+ screens. Freestyle Releasing has secured 1,200 screens for God Bless the Broken Road.
