‘Star Trek’ TV Expansion Coming

2 min read

With some minor drama recently as the two showrunners for Star Trek: Discovery were let go over problems between them and the writer’s room, Alex Kurtzman stepped in to take over that role for the ongoing second season of the series. Now according to Deadline, Kurtzman has signed a five-year eight-figure deal with CBS TV Studios to develop more material for the franchise.

There are no firm plans at the moment but Deadline is hearing that they’re looking at additional potential series, miniseries, and possibly even animated content to try and draw on different eras. One area that was given a bit more of a nod is the potential of an eight-episode limited series, which in my mind would be a great thing for those that have limited ability to dig into a full series role like Michelle Yeoh and other actors. Rumors also indicate some sort of potential of Patrick Stewart coming back to reprise his role of Jean-Luc Picard in some form.

“There is a very short list of writer-producer-directors that every film and television studio wants to be associated with, and Alex and his Secret Hideout team are always at the top,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “His talent, taste and ability to shepherd a successful project is unparalleled. Alex has done remarkable work for our Studio, dating back seven years to the launch of Hawaii Five-O, and we are thrilled that he, Heather and their team will be partnering with us for a long time to come.”

I found myself struggling with Star Trek: Discovery with its first couple of episodes but it quickly became a strong favorite within the franchise as a whole for some creative storytelling that has me curious to see where it’ll go in the future and just how/if they’ll try to align things with the previous works. It’s certainly not for everyone but I’m still surprised how invested I got in the show – and would love to see a Captain Tilly Mirror Universe spinoff.
