‘Ocean’s 8’ Steals The Box Office

2 min read

With not too much new the weekend prior, the box office saw a couple of new films arrive this weekend with one of them shaking things up a bit. Serving as a relaunch of the franchise, Ocean’s 8 landed in first with a $41.5 million take on a 470 million budget. It’s not opening worldwide in a big way as it hit just 16 markets but it did a nice $12 million there to bring us to a $53 million start. It’s going to face a lot of competition in the coming weeks but it should be a solid word of mouth film with audiences that would be interested skewing a bit older that will filter in over time.

Another new film this weekend was Hereditary from A24 that’s doing good with a $13 million debut on a $10 million budget. This marks the biggest opening by about $5 million for an A24 film, which tend to be critically acclaimed and often do well overall but aren’t big and splashy openers. The other new opener this weekend was Hotel Artemis which landed in the eighth position with a $3 million take with weak reviews, weak CinemaScore, and skewing older which doesn’t bode well for it.

Next weekend starts a very busy two weeks of film for me but with some wide release projects as well. Incredibles 2 is going to open in 4,200 screens for Pixar while Warner Bros. is going into 3,300 screens with the very fun looking Tag. Yash Raj is also going for a wide release instead of a targeted one with Race 3. For those keeping track, next weekend starts the three-day rollout for Pom Poko from Studio Ghibli on Sunday/Monday/Wednesday. And locally, I’m off to see the 70mm release of 2001, marking my first time seeing it on the big screen for the 50th anniversary.
