‘The Expanse’ Gets Amazon Pickup For Fourth Season

2 min read

It’s been a rough couple of weeks with so many series canceled, several of which that I watch. While Lucifer looks like it’s essentially lost at this point I was stoked that Brooklyn 99 got saved. But what hurt the most was the cancelation of The Expanse on Syfy where the network was limited in options as they only had broadcast/first run rights to it. Amazon’s been streaming it domestically while Netflix has worldwide rights outside of that, which mean Syfy wasn’t seeing much of a cut to keep it going.

The most coordinated effort at saving it was with Amazon and they’ve come through with Amazon’s boss himself, Jeff Bezos, at National Space Society’s International Space Development Conference in Los Angeles where he was an honoree.

“I was talking to the cast half an hour ago, before the break for dinner started,” Bezos said. “I was telling them that we are working hard at Amazon to save The Expanse but it wasn’t a done deal yet. During dinner, ten minutes ago, I just got word that The Expanse is saved,” Bezos said to a big applause. “The show is extraordinary and these guys are unbelievably talented,” he added, pointing to The Expanse table.

The project originally got a straight to series order as the property was in a very competitive situation. It was the first series for the Alcon Television Group to get the go ahead along with writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby, who worked on Children of Men and Iron Man. The pair serve as writers and executive producers on the series.

Plot concept: A thriller set 200 years in the future, The Expanse follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.
