‘Boba Fett’ Film Gets Writer/Director With James Mangold

We first learned of the plans for the standalone films way back in 2013 when it came to the Star Wars realm and we now have two of them out with Rogue One and Solo. Over the years we’ve had a few other ones talked about, including the one that has me the most excited with an Obi-wan Kenobi film that tentatively has a director in Stephen Daldry, but one that was formally announced before was a Boba Fett one.

That fell apart at the time as Josh Trank was brought on to direct it and multiple issues sunk the project and it’s been gestating in the background ever since. That’s now changing as it looks like James Mangold is coming on board to write and direct it. Mangold’s in the process of starting production on Ford vs Ferrari with principal photography getting underway but this would be where he jumps to next. Mangold worked with producer Simon Kinberg on Logan and Kinberg is involved in shepherding the standalone Star Wars films. Naturally, Disney/Lucasfilm has nothing to say at the moment as they’re focused on Solo, which looks to be setting some Memorial Day weekend records with a projected $139 million take.

The character of Boba Fett garnered a lot of attention with people my age as he was introduced first as a mail-in order figure (which I got a dozen of in the second round, thinking them as new Stormtroopers) before making an animated appearance in the Holiday Special and then formally in The Empire Strikes Back. In the years since we saw his origin in Attack of the Clones and an expanded look at his youth through The Clone Wars TV series. There’s a lot of possibilities to mine in the space between prequels and originals, especially if it draws in on other bounty hunters like Cad Bane, but there’s also the potential of a post-Return of the Jedi story as well.
