Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Helmed by a great new team, The luck powered mutant Domino is back in her own series. This new series also get more personal for her. Domino and her friend Inez investigate the disappearance of loggers near the Washington/Oregon border, and Domino expounds on the fact that her luck power can be a real pain sometimes. The people they find have a hostage, who turns into a giant monster. It turns out he can’t control his power either. Back in California, Neena and her partners Inez and Diamondback have taken the man with them so he can crash at her place temporarily. Turns out Inez threw a surprise for Domino’s birthday, and even Deadpool got invited. Domino starts getting odd head problems, so Diamondback brings us to Domino’s gift, where the story pivots back to the start. It’s here where we finally get a look at our villains. An old man approaches, led by a nurse who reveals herself as Topaz (she hired the hostage from earlier). Topaz makes short work of Domino, and our issue ends with Neena hurling to her death, seemingly bereft of luck.
In Summary:
The big point of this issue seems to have been Neena’s love/hate relationship with her powers. A good portion of her dialogue is dedicated to either praising or scoffing at it. Through Gail’s writing, Domino is portrayed in a very personal light, and it works so well. Baldeon’s art really succeeds in bringing facial emotions out, and Aburtov’s colors lend their hand there too. The dialogue feels so believable it’s almost unreal, and the relationship between Neena, Diamondback, and Inez is great. A big plus is that there isn’t anything you need to know about Domino before this book! Simone writes in such a way that anything you needed to know is covered right in this issue. Gail and her team have crafted an amazing first issue, and it really is one that should not be missed. I fully recommend this book, because it’s absolutely great!
