“Isono Takes Off!”

What They Say:
The year is 1555, the middle of the Warring States period, and one young man holds on to a very big dream. That young man, known as an empty-headed fool, is none other than Oda Nobunaga. Enchanted by his dream, a certain young girl who admires Nobunaga swears that she will become his ninja one day. Nobunaga has one goal: to unify Japan by military might! Decorated by a colorful cast of characters, including the airheaded Kichou, the errand boy Hideyoshi, the tsundere Nene, the straight man Mitsuhide, and the half-dead Hanbei, this heavy-hitting wartime gag anime is about to begin!!

Getting back into the swing of things the last time around took a bit of effort as the cast has grown so much since the start and it’s felt less focused because of all the historical material. With this episode, Iyesau has arrived and that makes for some humor in dealing with Nobunaga at the start. We even get Hanzo back for a bit, which delights Chidori more than some might care for. While the forces there grow, we also get that on the other side as the Asakura have shown up to reinforce things with the Azai. Suffice to say, there’s a lot of forces stacked up here with Nobunaga’s side overwhelming in numbers, though Tadakatsu has a problem in causing more injury to himself than anything else.

In Summary:
With a decent bit of action at the end, the lead-up to the battle has a lot of very quick hit little comedic moments that work well enough because we do have some connection with most of the characters. But it’s also not able to linger and take its time to let some of the gags land before it moves onto the next quick hit one, which dilutes the strength of them. It’s silly and fun but it has less of the impact that it needs – and used to have back in the first season – because of how overstuffed it is.
