Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
With the various arcs at play and the larger scale storyline that’s riding along all of this, Injustice 2 takes some curious turns that has me wondering if it’s going to stick to its allotted number of issues. More is more than fine but I just fear a bit of a rushed story as everything piles up. That said, Tom Taylor has had some very good runs on this property overall and I’ve got a whole lot of faith since this particular incarnation has been very fun. He’s joined once again by Mike S. Miller for this issue and his work on the book continues to be just as solid as past installments, even if some of it just feels a little too light on background details for my tastes. The weekly digital books are always dealing with this to some degree so it’s not a major issue.
The recent material focusing on Black Adam and his plan with Kara has gone through some revisions with the arrival of Damien on the scene and they’re now moving into something a little more complicated that should be fun. Setting her up as a shipwreck survivor, they want to get her onto Paradise Island to find Diana and then they’ll follow and rescue. It’s something that’s difficult for Kara since she doesn’t like to like but the situation unfolds so it becomes more about withholding truths rather than outright lying. I really like the dynamic between her and Damien as there’s some fun potential there but Kara is mostly just kind of a prop for this issue, moved from place to place and kind of going with the flow rather than actively doing anything.
We do get to touch base with Diana in this chapter and she’s certainly not doing well. Chained in a cell with the bindings that were created for Ares previously, she’s a mess and her fellow Amazons are furious with her about being drawn into an unjust war based on lies. She’s doing what she can to escape but the chains are far more than she can deal with. Even Ares arrival provides for some sharp cutting moments in the dialogue that just serves to raise her ire up all the more. What’s intriguing, however, is that the Amazons have seemingly stripped her of the name Wonder Woman as it and the gear are now applied to Nubia, who we see greeting Kara at the end of the character. That opens up a whole new world of material that can be explored and a potentially earth-shattering fight later.
In Summary:
Injustice 2 works setup for the “new” location as we get to Paradise Island and see the state of things after the recent big events. Getting to see what’s happened to Diana is certainly interesting as is the way the mantle has been taken over to push back on what happened. I like what we get with Kara but I wish she was a more fully formed character here rather than just going with everyone and doing things that she’s uncomfortable with, but there’s a level of persuasiveness that you know can come from both Damien and Black Adam. It’s a solid issue that looks great and moves things forward where you can see any number of new brawls springing from.
