This week saw the Wednesday release of Transformers: The Last Knight which helped it to reach a $69 million take over the course of the five day run, and $45 million of which came from the three day weekend. The last time this film series saw a five-day release was in 2011 with Dark of the Moon which did $97 million during its three day and $162 million overall. The previous film was the 2014 release of Age of Extinction and that had a $100 million opening over its three-day weekend. Suffice to say, the shine is finally off this property with North American audiences.
That said, the film hit 41 inernational markets where it did another $196 million that will help push it forward, and $123 million of that came from China. While there may be some that figured this would be the end of this run it looks like the money machine is still churning for it, even if many fans really think it needs a complete and total reboot.
The second place position goes to Wonder Woman with another fantastic hold of just a 39% drop in its fourth week that brings in another $25 million. That brings its domestic total to $318 million so far and has it surpassing Man of Steel and will overtake both Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman by the end of this coming week if not sooner. The film is doing well overseas where it’s at $334 million to bring it to $635 million worldwide, which earned it the ranking this week of the highest grossing film by a female director as it moved passed Mama Mia
Not much else new opened this weekend as it was expected that Transformers would suck a lot of the oxygen out of the room and most films had takes under $8 million as we get a mild lull before the holiday weekend. This week sees a Wednesday release with Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver while the coming weekend for the holiday brings out Despicable Me 3 and The House for some light fun for people to check out as they look for someplace cool to be in the heat.
