What They Say
Ever caught yourself screaming, “I could just kill that teacher”? What would it take to justify such antisocial behavior and weeks of detention? Especially if he’s the best teacher you’ve ever had? Giving you an “F” on a quiz? Mispronouncing your name during roll call…again? How about blowing up the moon and threatening to do the same to Mother Earth—unless you take him out first?! Plus a reward of a cool 100 million from the Ministry of Defense! Okay, now that you’re committed… How are you going to pull this off? What does your pathetic class of misfits have in their arsenal to combat Teach’s alien technology, bizarre powers and… tentacles?!
Assignment 14
Lowly Class E and elite Class A compete for the most customers at their school festival booths. So far, the students of Class E are holding their own, despite their location on the mountaintop. Then a parade of familiar faces, some welcome and some…not so much…drop by with surprising consequences. Will Principal Asano’s son Gakushu be able to maintain his position as the illustrious leader of Class A? Who could possibly replace him in hopes of leading the students to victory and the subjugation of the weak…?
Content: (please note that content portions of this review contains spoilers):
With their life and death struggle against the Reaper finally over, the kids can return to regular school activities. Or at least as regular as it gets for the student assassins of Class E.
In their usual struggles against Class A, our heroes of Class E are out to gather the most money during the school festival. But that will be a tall order considering their classroom is off campus and at the top of a large hill. Not to mention the fact that Class A can pull in professional comedians and musicians to act in their classes festival option. Then on top of that, Class A builds a dual room that can switch immediately from one act to another, essentially increasing their money gathering capabilities by a large margin. This right here shows us the underlying struggle between those with wealth and everyone else. Class A acts as the rich kids that can buy whatever they want, whereas Class E must do with whatever they can scrounge up.
Thus, Class E captured from the wild culinary experiment begins. Class E scours the mountainside looking for native plants that they can use in unique ways to make their cuisine stand out. All this in the hopes that the few courageous visitors that climb the mountain will create enough word of mouth to drive visitors to Class E’s mountaintop classroom and festival restaurant.
But will this be enough to defeat Class A in the school festival? It will be a tall order, but Class E has been up to the task in the past!
In Summary
Assassination Classroom proves to be more than just pure entertainment. All along the way, Matsui has told an evocative tale examining details beyond the scope of most manga series. Assassination Classroom has examined the root of psychological warfare and class rivalry between the “have nots” in Class E and the “haves” in Class A. No other chapter has focused on this as much as those in volume 14. Class A literally has the rich kid connections that allow them to man their school festival booth with professional comedians and talent. Whereas Class E must scrounge around the mountain their classroom is on just to find ingredients for their school festival restaurant. But rather than complain about the obvious mismatch, Koro Sensei has taught Class E to fight with everything they have and to never take defeat sitting down. This is another interesting volume in a great series.
